Instructions for Contributors

The journal "Cardiovascular Engineering" (Journal for Extracorporeal Circulation, Assist Devices, Transplantation and Artificial Organs) publishes peer reviewed original articles and reviews dealing with clinical and experimental investigations related to the fields of Extracorporeal Circulation, Extracorporeal Lung Assist, Mechanical Circulatory Support, Biomaterials, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Organ Transplantations, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Informatics, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. Manuscripts may be submitted in English. Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (one original and two copies), typewritten on one side of the paper, with a wide margin.

Submission of Papers:

Manuscripts are to be sent to: Pabst Science Publishers, Editorial Office “Cardiovascular Engineering”, Eichengrund 28, D-49525 Lengerich (Germany).

All manuscripts (also invited papers) are refereed critically by two or more members of the Editorial Board or consultants. The review process takes 10 to 12 weeks; revisions require additional time. Acceptance of manuscripts is based on scientific content and presentation of the material. The Editorial Staff selects the reviewers, corresponds with the author, and makes the final decision on the manuscript.

Manuscript Preparation: This journal accepts articles prepared in conformation with the Vancouver style as defined in the New England Journal of Medicine (1991), 324, 424-428. Manuscripts are to be submitted to the Editorial Staff. Manuscripts must be submitted in English in triplicate (one original and two copies) including copies of figures and tables. Only the original copy will be returned to the author in case of revision and must be typed double-spaced on A4 white bond paper. This applies to all parts of the manuscript, including references and tables legends. Liberal margins (3 cm) should be left at the top. The manuscript should be submitted in the following order: title page, summary and key words, text, references, tables, illustrations or figures and legends. Each page, beginning with title page, should also include the page number. If the manuscript is written on a computer, we require the enclosure of the floppy disk additionally - under exact indication of the computer and programme used (3.5 inches Disk, MS-DOS compatible, IBM-system).

Title page: The title page should include only (i) article title, (ii) author’s names (including first and middle names), (iii) name and address of the institution, (iv) name, address, telephone, fax number, Email address of the person to whom proofs and reprints requests should be addressed.

Summary page: The page following the title page should include a brief abstract of 200 to 250 words describing the purpose, methods, results, and conclusion of the manuscript contents. The summary should be divided into: Background, Methods, Results and Conclusion. Keywords: Four to ten keywords or terms must be provided for indexing. Include words already in the title.

Text: The text of the article should begin on a new page and have the following parts: introduction, methods, results and discussion.

References: References are to be numbered and cited in the order in which they appear except for reviews. The reference section should be typed double-spaced at the end of the text, following the sample formats given below. All authors’ names must be provided for up to six individuals, if there are six or more authors, list the first six and add et al.

Figures and tables: Include a photocopy of each figure above the legend. Original figures must be submitted as unmounted clear glossy prints with lettering large enough to be legible in the event of half-size reduction. Submit one glossy print (13 x 18 cm) and two photocopies of each figure. On the back of each figure, give author’s name first, the figure number, and indicate the top with an arrow. Do not write directly on the back of the figure, rather, write on a gummed label and affix it to the back of the figures. Each figure should have a separate, explicit legend, typed double-spaced on a sheet separate from the text. Figure numbers should be arabic corresponding with the order in which the figures are presented in the text. Identify all abbreviations appearing on the figure in alphabetical order at the end of each legend. Estimates for color works will be provided upon acceptance of the manuscript. If color illustrations are to be considered for publication, please submit both positive 35-mm transparencies and/or color prints. Part of the printing costs for color illustrations will be born by the journal. Tables must be typed double-spaced, each on a separate sheet, with title above - and any notes below. If the figures and tables are worked out by a computer, we require the enclosure of the disc additionally with exact indication of the computer and programme used (IBM, MS-DOS compatible, 3.5 inches Disk). Style: “Cardiovascular Engineering - Journal for Extracorporeal Circulation, Assist Devices, Transplantation and Artificial Organs” follows the general style, abbreviation style, and reference style described in “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals” (see Br Med J (1982), 284, 1766-1770). Proofs: Proofs must be returned within three to five days of receipt; a later return may cause a delay in publication of an paper. Please check text, tables, legends, and references carefully. To expedite publication, page proofs, rather than galleys, will be sent to the author. Alterations other than the correction of printing errors will be charged to the author(s). All manuscripts are subject to copy editing. Form and content must be carefully checked to exclude the need for corrections in proof. The goal of the Editors and the Publisher is to publish important regular papers as rapidly as possible. Manuscripts not prepared according to the above instructions will be returned for revision before editorial processing and review. Submission of a paper on diskette can mean a considerably shorter publication period.
